Anatomi selalu menjadi ilmu yang sangat menarik. Ilmu anatomi merupakan ilmu mayor. Tanpa pengetahuan anatomi tubuh manusia yang baik akan sangat sulit untuk memahami ilmu kedokteran secara menyeluruh. Suatu artikel menarik dipublikasikan melalui situs Life in The Fastlane. Situs tersebut merupakan salah satu situs yang memberikan Free Online Access Medicine, akses gratis ilmu kedokteran. Artikel tersebut berjudul De-eponymising anatomical terminology yang ditulis oleh Dr Robert Buttner, Dr Jessica Lee dan Dr Mike Cadogan. Pada dasarnya tulisan ketiganya berusaha untuk mendefinisikan ulang terminologi anatomi terutama istilah-istilah eponim.
Kami berusaha menerjemahkan artikel tersebut berdasarkan lisensi Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License yang tertera pada situs lift.com.
Penulis artikel sendiri telah meninjau lebih dari 700 eponim anatomi dan histologis (non-patologis) dan mengembangkan basis data yang dapat ditelusuri pada Terminologia Anatomica (TA2) tahun 2019 yang diterbitkan oleh Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT).
Penulis juga menyoroti sejumlah kecil inkonsistensi, kebingungan, ketidaktepatan, dan masalah terkait penggunaan eponim anatomi dalam bahasa medis modern.
Penulis artikel tersebut beranggapan bahwa pada sebagian besar kasus, istilah atau terminologi yang diakui secara internasional, berorientasi non-orang, dan istilah resmi dapat digunakan untuk menggantikan eponim tanpa merusak konteks atau pendidikan.

Penggunaan Eponim di bidang kedokteran merupakan suatu hal yang sangat umum. Meskipun demikian, terdapat perdebatan terkait keakuratan, efektivitas, dan kesesuaian budaya penggunaan eponim dalam terminologi anatomi.
Mayoritas eponim memiliki terminologi modern yang disetujui dan diterima. Namun, masih banyak dokter yang terus menggunakan dan mengajarkan istilah eponim dalam praktik sehari-hari.
Sebelum membahas lebih jauh terkait eponim dalam terminologi anatomi ada baiknya kita terlebih dahulu mengenal apa yang dimaksud dengan eponim.
Eponim merupakan suatu istilah atau terminologi dalam bidang kedokteran yang menggunakan nama seseorang. Misalnya, penggunaan nama Colles untuk mendefinisikan patah tulang radius 1/3 distal disertai dislokasi tulang ulna. Fraktur Colles demikian eponim untuk mengistilahkan kondisi tersebut.
German language anatomical society (Atomische Gesellschaft) merupakan organisasi pertama yang berusaha menyelesaikan masalah penamaan dalam struktur anatomi tubuh manusia sejak tahun 1887.
Wilhelm His et al mendefinisikan aturan pertama dari Anatomy Club, bahwa setiap struktur anatomi hanya boleh memiliki satu nama.
Kutipan aturan Wilhelm His et al tersebut adalah sebagai berikut:
“Setiap bagian yang akan dinamai hanya memiliki satu nama. Nama-nama harus benar dalam bahasa Latin dan linguistik. Nama tersebut harus sesingkat mungkin dan sesederhana mungkin. Nama-nama tersebut dimaksudkan sebagai pengingat belaka dan bukan untuk mengklaim deskripsi atau interpretasi spekulatif. Nama-nama yang tergabung bersama harus dikomposisikan semirip mungkin (mis. Femur, arteri femoralis, vena femoralis, nervus femoralis).”

Edisi pertama Nomina Anatomica (1895) memiliki 200 struktur anatomi tubuh manusia dengan lebih satu nama. Pada edisi pertama tersebut juga telah dikenal 165 istilah eponim untuk terminologi anatomi.
Jumlah terminologi anatomi yang melanggar aturan bahwa setiap struktur hanya boleh memiliki satu nama semakin bertambah pada Nomina Anatomica edisi berikutnya.
Nomina Anatomica marupakan pedoman internasional tentang terminologi anatomi manusia. Namun, penggunaannya telah digantikan oleh Terminologia Anatomica pada tahun 1998.
Hingga akhir abad kesembilan belas sekitar 30.000 istilah anatomi telah digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan setiap sudut bagian tubuh.
Selama abad terakhir penggunaan nama pribadi atau tokoh tertentu dalam istilah anatomi telah menjadi perdebatan.
Eponim secara umum mungkin harus dilarang penggunaannya, tetapi dapat ditoleransi bila diperlukan. Toleransi yang sering ditemukan adalah menambahkan nama pribadi atau tokoh ke dalam istilah latin resmi misalnya Calot’s triangle untuk struktur Trigonum cystohepaticum [Trigonum Caloti].
FIPAT pada tahun 2015 menetapkan bahwa istilah latin (istilah resmi) untuk terminologi anatomi memiliki sinonim atau istilah terkait. Selain itu, FIPAT juga menetapkan bahwa istilah dalam bahasa lain diklasifikasikan istilah yang setara atau sinonim atau istilah terkait.
Dalam Terminologica Anatomica (TA2) edisi 2019; Terminologica Neuroanatomica (TNA); dan Terminologica Emryologica (TE2) Eponim terdaftar sebagai ‘istilah terkait’. Hal ini menggerakkan International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) selangkah lebih dekat dengan konsensus dan de-eponimifikasi global.

Dr Robert Buttner, Dr Jessica Lee dan Dr Mike Cadogan berhasil mengidentifikasi 700 istilah eponim anatomi non patologis yang dikaitkat dengan 432 eponim yang berbeda. Temuan tersebut antara lain:
Penulis artikel ini merekomendasikan penghapusan eponim untuk terminologi anatomi. Hal ini didasarkan pada terdapat inkonsistensi, kebingungan, ketidaktepatan, dan masalah yang berkaitan dengan eponim anatomi dalam istilah kedokteran modern.
Penulis juga coba memaparkan apa saja yang menjadi dasar mereka mengambil rekomendasi bahwa eponim anatomi harus dihapuskan.
Polisemi merupakan bentuk kata atau istilah yang bermakna lebih dari satu. Eponim sering memasukkan istilah kedokteran secara kacau. Kondisi ini menyebabkan pelanggaran aturan terminologi anatomi bahwa setiap nama struktur haru unik.

Pada tahun 1990 Mireille Cavalerie memperkenalkan istilah Éponymes confusionnants berkaitan dengan kebingungan eponim yang berkaitan dengan organ simetris yang berbagi fungsi yang sama. Misalnya, saluran Stensen dan Wharton sama-sama tidak memiliki petunjuk untuk menunjukkan mana di antara mereka yang termasuk kelenjar parotis dan yang ke kelenjar submandibular.
Orly (2014) menciptakan istilah “hantu bibliografi” sehubungan dengan publikasi eponim yang, meskipun disebutkan oleh para sejarawan, tampaknya tidak pernah ada.
Beberapa istilah eponim merujuk pada dokter terkemuka tanpa bukti rekaman deskripsi atau penemuan. Contohnya, tuberculum dorsalis radius, eponim diingat sebagai tuberkulum Lister yang berasal dari nama ahli bedah Inggris Sir Joseph Lister (1827–1912), meskipun tidak ada bukti yang pernah ia gambarkan.
